Who is this for?

STI testing is recommended for anyone who is sexually active — especially if you have new or multiple partners.

New Partner

Starting a new relationship? Get tested together for peace of mind before becoming intimate.

Possible Exposure

Had unprotected sex or a condom break? Early testing can catch infections before symptoms appear.

Symptoms

Unusual discharge, burning, sores, or discomfort? Get tested and treated quickly.

Routine Screening

Sexually active adults should get tested regularly. Many STIs have no symptoms but are still transmissible.

Partner Notification

Been notified by a partner that they tested positive? Get tested and treated right away.

Common Question

Why urine testing? What about swabs?

If you've been tested in a clinic before, you might expect a urethral swab — uncomfortable and often dreaded. The good news: urine-based testing is now the gold standard for detecting chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Modern nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) detect bacterial DNA in urine just as accurately as swabs — without the discomfort. You simply provide a urine sample and you're done.

No swabs needed

Blood draw

Start with urine-only if needles aren't your thing — add bloodwork anytime.

What to expect at the lab

Your first visit takes 10 minutes. Here's exactly what happens.

1
Select your lab

Choose LifeLabs or Dynacare from your patient portal. We fax your requisition digitally — it's waiting when you arrive.

2
Check in

Bring your health card or photo ID. Tell the front desk: "My doctor sent a requisition for testing." That's it.

3
Provide sample

For urine-only tests, you'll use a private washroom. If bloodwork is included, a quick blood draw follows.

4
Done!

Results in 1-3 business days. We'll notify you when they're ready to view in your secure portal.

Pro tip for regular testers

If you're testing with urine samples regularly, visits are typically walk-in and brief — you're only providing a urine sample, so there's no setup for a blood draw. In and out in under 10 minutes.

Real scenarios, real solutions

See how TeleTest fits different situations

"I test every 3 months. I request a requisition online, pop into LifeLabs on my lunch break, give a urine sample, and I'm out in 5 minutes. Results come to my portal — no phone calls."

"We both wanted to get tested before becoming intimate. I got my requisition that evening, went to the lab the next morning, and had results in 2 days. Peace of mind for both of us."

"A condom broke and I was panicking. I filled out the assessment at midnight, and because I had symptoms, the doctor started me on antibiotics right away — before results even came back."

"I didn't want this on my family doctor's records. Nothing gets shared unless I ask. When I tested positive, the follow-up was all through secure messaging — no awkward phone calls."

"I hate needles, so I've avoided testing for years. I didn't know you could test for chlamydia and gonorrhea with just urine. It was painless — at least now I know my status."

"I had concerns about my partner. TeleTest let me get tested privately — no awkward conversations. You should be able to test whenever you want, as often as you want. That's your right."

Need treatment now?

If you have symptoms or a partner tested positive, treatment can start immediately — even before your results come back.

Partner tested positive

If your partner has a confirmed case of chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trich, you likely have it too. We can prescribe treatment immediately — no need to wait for your own results.

You have symptoms

Discharge, burning when you pee, pain, or unusual sores after a new encounter? Treatment can start right away while we confirm with testing.

Why treat early?

Untreated STIs can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and increased HIV transmission risk. Early treatment stops the infection and prevents spreading to partners.

Did you know?

Facts about STIs in Canada that might surprise you

Most STIs have zero symptoms

Up to 70% of chlamydia cases in women and 50% in men show no symptoms at all. You can have an infection and spread it without knowing.

Syphilis rates up 5x since 2012

Syphilis cases in Canada have increased 5-fold — from 2,000 in 2012 to over 11,500 in 2021. This isn't history — it's a current outbreak.

Most STIs are easily curable

Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are all bacterial infections treated with antibiotics. Caught early, treatment is quick and effective.

HIV: Undetectable = Untransmittable

With treatment, HIV can be suppressed to undetectable levels. Science confirms: undetectable means zero risk of sexual transmission.

Untreated STIs can affect fertility

Chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause pelvic inflammatory disease in women and epididymitis in men — both can lead to infertility if untreated.

Oral sex isn't "safe" sex

Gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, herpes, and HPV can all be transmitted through oral sex. Throat infections are often symptom-free.

Urine tests miss throat & rectal infections

Standard urine tests only detect genital infections. If you've had oral or anal sex, you need site-specific swab testing.

Ages 15-29 account for 2/3 of cases

Young adults are disproportionately affected. If you're sexually active in this age group, routine testing every 6-12 months is recommended.

Condoms reduce risk, but don't eliminate it

Condoms significantly reduce STI transmission but don't cover everything. Herpes, HPV, and syphilis can spread through skin contact.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about STI testing with TeleTest.

You can likely go to the lab today. The vast majority of patients receive their lab requisition within 90 minutes of submitting their intake (9AM – 9PM, 7 days/week). No waiting rooms, no appointments — as soon as our clinician reviews your intake, the requisition is sent to your phone. Walk into any LifeLabs, Dynacare, or Alpha Labs immediately.

No. Our service is primarily text-based — you answer medical questions via our secure portal. There's no need for a live video or phone call for standard STI testing, making the process faster and more comfortable.

Because messaging-based healthcare is still new to most Ontarians. Before the pandemic, getting a lab requisition meant booking an appointment, waiting weeks, and sitting in a clinic for 10 minutes of face time. That model made sense when it was the only option — but it was never the only possible option. Virtual care and asynchronous messaging now let physicians review your information, order tests, and prescribe treatment without you ever leaving your home. It's faster, more private, and just as safe — the same licensed doctors, the same accredited labs. Once you try it, you'll wonder why healthcare ever worked any other way.

We'll help you figure it out. During your intake, you'll answer a few questions about your situation — recent exposures, symptoms, and what you're looking for. Based on your answers, a licensed clinician recommends the appropriate tests. You're never guessing on your own, and you won't pay for tests you don't need.

The $49 fee covers our secure messaging platform, which allows you to access a clinician remotely without an appointment — this service isn't funded by OHIP/MSP. The actual lab tests (blood work and urine samples) are fully covered by OHIP/MSP. You won't be charged by the lab for standard STI testing.

Yes, we welcome uninsured patients. You'll pay the TeleTest platform fee ($49) plus private lab fees (paid directly to the lab). A standard STI panel typically costs $50–$100 at the lab. If you have UHIP or private insurance, we provide receipts for reimbursement claims.

Not unless you want them to. We don't fax results to your family doctor unless you explicitly ask us to. The only exception: by law, only positive results for certain infections (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HIV, Syphilis) must be reported to public health authorities (Public Health Ontario or BCCDC) for contact tracing — negative results are never reported. This happens regardless of where you get tested.

Yes. When you arrive at the lab, you can choose not to show your health card and instead pay the private lab fee ($50–$100) out-of-pocket. This prevents your results from being associated with your health card in provincial laboratory systems — meaning they won't be linked to your health card number if your doctor searches based on your health card. Other healthcare providers can only access these results if they explicitly search for your name. Important: TeleTest does not offer fully anonymous testing. Only positive results for gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B/C are reported to public health with your name and contact information — negative results stay completely private and are never reported to anyone (including your family doctor).

Swab kits are only for oral and rectal screening. Urine tests miss infections in the throat or rectum — a swab is required. Most patients prefer not to have a doctor perform these, so we mail a discreet kit to your home for private collection. You then drop it off at the lab. All other testing is done at the lab: urine samples for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomonas, plus bloodwork for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, and other STIs. We use accredited labs (LifeLabs, Dynacare) — the same ones your family doctor uses — ensuring the highest quality, clinically validated results.

Yes. If you've been exposed to a confirmed case of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, or Trichomonas, tell us in your intake. Our clinicians can prescribe treatment immediately — you don't have to wait for your own test results to start healing.

No, you can pick it up immediately. We transmit prescriptions electronically to any pharmacy of your choice in Ontario and BC. Walk into your local Shoppers, Rexall, or any pharmacy and pick up your medication the same day.

Yes — we've been operating since 2021 with over 50,000 patient visits. TeleTest is run by licensed Canadian clinicians registered with their provincial regulatory colleges. We use the same accredited labs (LifeLabs, Dynacare) as your family doctor. Your health information is protected under Canadian privacy legislation, and we follow the same privacy and security standards as any medical clinic.

No — testing doesn't require treatment. Many people just want to know their status for peace of mind, before a new relationship, or as part of routine health. You're under no obligation to receive treatment through us. If you do test positive, our clinicians will discuss your options via secure messaging.

We can test for syphilis, but treatment requires an in-person injection. Syphilis treatment must be administered by a healthcare provider in person. If you test positive, we'll help connect you with appropriate in-person care for treatment.

PEP is emergency treatment after exposure; PrEP is ongoing prevention. PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) must be started within 72 hours of a potential HIV exposure — this is an emergency and you should go to the ER immediately. PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a daily or on-demand medication for people at ongoing risk of HIV. We offer PrEP prescriptions, but we do not provide PEP.

You'll receive an email notification. When your results are available, we'll send an email letting you know to log in to your secure patient portal to view them. Important: Make sure to check your spam/junk folder and add our email to your contacts so you don't miss the notification. Results typically arrive 1-3 business days after your lab visit.
