Where to get blood tests in Ottawa
Ottawa has a mix of public and private labs covering everything from routine bloodwork to specialized panels. Knowing the difference saves time and money.
Common tests you can get locally
Most labs in the city run the standard panels: Complete Blood Count (CBC), lipid panel, fasting glucose, liver and kidney function, and TSH for thyroid. These are the bread-and-butter tests your family doctor will usually order.
Specialized testing (cancer markers, genetic panels, infectious disease screens) is also available, though some tests need a physician referral and a smaller subset can be ordered direct-to-consumer.
Public vs. private labs
Public labs operate inside hospitals and government-funded clinics. If your test is OHIP-covered and you've got a doctor's requisition, this is the cheapest route. The trade-off is that wait times can be longer.
Private labs (Dynacare, LifeLabs) typically have shorter waits, online booking, and online results portals. OHIP still covers most standard tests at these labs as long as you have a valid requisition. You'll pay out of pocket for anything not covered (some hormone panels, vitamin D in many cases, advanced cardiac markers).
Walk-in vs. appointment
Walk-in is convenient if you don't want to plan ahead, but expect a longer wait at peak times (mornings, after work). Appointments are usually quicker, especially for fasting tests where you want to get in and out before breakfast. Both Dynacare and LifeLabs let you book online.
Fastest labs for bloodwork in Ottawa
Speed depends on three things: how long you wait at the clinic, how long the lab takes to process the sample, and how long until you (or your doctor) see the result.
What "fast" actually means
- Wait time: from when you check in to when your blood is drawn.
- Processing time: how quickly the lab runs the test once they have the sample.
- Reporting time: how quickly results are released through a portal, your doctor, or to you directly.
Labs that tend to be quickest
Dynacare. Multiple locations in Ottawa, walk-in or appointment, online results portal. Routine results are usually back in 24 to 48 hours.
LifeLabs. Wide network in the city, online booking, results in roughly the same timeframe.
Ottawa Hospital Laboratories. Best for hospital-referred or inpatient work. Internal turnaround is fast, but you need a referral.

How to wait less
- Book online. A 10-minute appointment slot beats an unpredictable walk-in queue most of the time.
- Go early. The very first slots of the day are usually quickest, especially for fasting tests.
- Avoid Monday mornings and lunch hours. These are the busiest times.
What's available and where
Routine tests, available everywhere
- CBC for general health, anemia, infection.
- Lipid panel for cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.
- Blood glucose for diabetes screening or monitoring.
- Liver function tests (ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin).
- Thyroid function (TSH, free T4, sometimes T3).
These can be done walk-in or by appointment, and results usually come back within a few days.
Specialized tests
- Genetic testing is available at Dynacare and LifeLabs but usually needs a physician's referral.
- Cancer markers (PSA, CA-125) are routine in larger labs but often need special handling.
- Infectious disease panels (HIV, hepatitis B/C, syphilis) are available at most major labs.
Call ahead for specialized tests. Some samples have to be shipped to a central facility, which adds a few days to turnaround.
Accessibility
- Mobility: most labs have accessible entrances. Some private services offer home visits.
- Language: Ottawa is bilingual, so English and French are standard at most locations.
- Hours: some Dynacare and LifeLabs sites open early or run Saturday hours, which is handy if you can't take time off work.
Costs
What you pay depends on the test and how it's ordered.
OHIP-covered vs. out of pocket
- OHIP-covered. Most routine bloodwork (CBC, lipids, glucose, basic liver and kidney function, TSH) is fully covered when ordered by a physician. You just need a valid OHIP card and a requisition.
- Out of pocket. Some tests aren't covered, including many hormone panels, advanced cardiovascular markers, and certain vitamin tests. Prices range from about $30 for a basic test to several hundred for a comprehensive panel. A vitamin D test runs around $40, a full hormone panel can be $150 or more.
For a list of tests we offer with OHIP coverage notes, see our Ontario cost guide.
Public vs. private pricing
- Public labs. Cheapest for OHIP-covered tests. For non-covered tests, prices are usually lower than private, but availability is more limited.
- Private labs. Convenience and speed cost more for anything OHIP doesn't cover. Always ask for the price up front so you're not surprised.
If you have insurance
Many private insurance plans reimburse for non-OHIP tests, especially when there's a doctor's note. Check your plan's diagnostic testing benefits before paying out of pocket.
Saving money
- Use a public lab for OHIP-covered tests.
- Get multiple tests done in one visit; some private labs discount panels.
- For direct-to-consumer testing (no doctor required), bundled packages are usually cheaper than ordering tests one at a time.
Choosing a lab
A few things to weigh:
Location and hours. The closest lab isn't always the best. Check if it opens early enough for fasting bloodwork, and whether it has Saturday hours if you work weekdays.
Speed. If you need a result fast, pick a private lab with online booking and a results portal. We track turnaround times across Ottawa locations.
Cost and insurance. Confirm what's OHIP-covered, ask about cash prices for anything that isn't, and check whether your private plan reimburses.
Test availability. Specialized tests can require specific labs. Call ahead.
Accreditation. Look for labs accredited by the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH). Accredited labs are audited for accuracy and consistency.
Patient experience. Front-desk attitude, wait times, and physical accessibility (parking, wheelchair access) all matter, especially if you'll be a repeat visitor.
Bottom line
For routine bloodwork in Ottawa, Dynacare and LifeLabs offer the fastest turnaround when you book ahead. Public labs are fine if you don't mind a longer wait and your test is OHIP-covered. For specialized testing, call ahead and confirm the lab does it on-site. Our same-day lab testing service pairs with automated results so you get answers as soon as the lab releases them.
Quick tips:
- Book online when you can, especially for fasting tests.
- Compare public and private options based on what's covered.
